POMO D’ORO – CORFU TOWN

We found this little gem researching the island before we went to Corfu. Pomo d’Oro is truly a magnificent restaurant, inside and out, from the ambience, through the flawless, nearly ‘invisible’ service to the most delicious wine and dishes.

The restaurant is ran by chef Aristotelis Mengoulas who is half Greek and half French but lived over ten years in Italy. he showcases the great understanding of fresh ingredients and local cuisine with help of his partner Maria who manages front of the house and has sensational understanding of wines.

The dish that we ordered twice was Pomme de terre – absolutely perfect potato salad with feta mousse, capers, dried nouboulo, truffle, toasted almonds, fresh herbs and evoo – this dish truly was a perfection,

The other dishes not far behind that we tried were:

Cattle fish mortadella with saffron sauce and artichokes.

Rooster mousseline stuffed with liver cream, lasagna, spicy pastitsado ragu.

Country pork confit in olive oil, pepper, confit tomato, onion, roasted pepper and vegetable sauce.

Beef fillet, mushroom, potato puree, smoked Metsovone cream, truffle.

Bitter chocolate mousse, citrus, citrus ice cream, almonds – perfect with a bit of sea salt and virgin olive oil!

Another dish to mention, not only because it was fantastic, but also because the story behind it is so real is ‘Gemista’

Cold tomato risotto, pepperoni, pine nuts, feta, grapes and fresh herbs. Gemista is Greek stuffed peppers or tomatoes dish, stuffed with rice and sometimes meat, the idea or Pomo d’Oro Gemista came as people who cook the traditional version, always make a large batch of it and leave it in the fridge, then the next day when it comes to eating it again, they cannot be bothered to warm it up and are eating it cold, therefore at Pomo d’Oro they came up with the idea to make it intentionally a cold dish.

One of the regrets I have is that we did not visit this place more times.
