Being based in Corfu Town meant we could easily travel across the island – as both my husband and I do not drive (and also like a drink or two), we used local taxi services which were absolutely amazing (real funny characters too!).
One of the places we were recommended was Ortholithi in Agios Gordios, about 25 minutes drive from Corfu Town, on the other side of the island. Situated right on the long stretch of beautiful, sandy beach, surrounded by cliffs and rocks, it was a real good find. The restaurant is run by Aspassia – a lovely local woman whose personality is larger than life and her sister Maria who runs the kitchen. You can spot the whole family being involved with uncles and kids also helping out on the floor.
The food is super fresh and being prepared daily with the produce they get delivered from the boats and the local market. You can find all the delicious local specialities like deep fried squid, greek salads, grilled aubergines with feta cheese, fresh fish and octopus – all served with delicious freshly fried potatoes.

We visited this place on a many occasions as it ticks all the boxes – the food, the staff and the location – once you finish your meal, you can plop yourself on one of the restaurants sunbeds on beach and even order a cold beer from there.
One of the dishes we will always remember was scorpion fish bourdeto – a fish stew with lovely spicy, tomatoey red sauce – I am salivating just typing it. Couple of times we visited Ortholithi we had cod bourdeto but Aspassia kept telling us how amazing the true bourdeto is – one with scorpion fish – but sadly as it was nearly out of season, it was a difficult fish to catch.
Luckily just before we were flying back home, we visited this place for the last time and we found out Aspassia managed to get 2 scorpion fish hoping we will come and try the ‘real deal’ her sister Maria cooked just for us while we were sipping cold beer on the beach which was so kind of her.

When we had to leave, it felt like we have a new extended Greek family hoping to reunite next year,
