Accidentally (or very cleverly planned on our part), my husband and I keep ending up in France on ‘eating’ holidays every year.
Last time we went to France was in October last year. Expecting cold days and cosy evenings, it turned out to be 26C degrees sunny days and lots of eating outside. This time we decided to visit Bergerac in Dordogne in the southwest. It is known for the half timbered buildings and many castes that dot surrounding countryside, also last but not least Cyrano de Bergerac.
We were lucky that there were still local markets happening every Tuesday and Saturday, also just right for some truffly goodness! We spent hours walking around through the markets admiring local produce, wishing we would take it all back with us to the UK, but sadly as we couldn’t, we decided we will eat it all. Well, not all…but a LOT!
All the walking through the historic town was making us thirsty very often, but fear not, as Dordogne is a large wine region, we had many places where we could enjoy refreshing local wines and more.
Anyone who loves food knows well that the French food is like God of foods. Not for anyone on a diet or with clogged arteries as the cuisine is full of butter, cream and other animal fats. We have indulged and some more, from duck confit, through seafood and caviar to veal and foie grass, not to mention to die for pastries and baked goods. I think the highlight of the food was cheese ice cream served with the cheese course – I never had anything like it, soft and sweet but also rich and cheesy, one of the best dish I tried in a very long time.
