City breaks are always full on, especially when you go to places you never been before. Couple of months ago we decided to visit Brussels with our friends. We never been to Brussels, never really heard anything about it apart from the obvious Euro- Brexit drama, and weirdly led by the idea of it being very clean and neat we decided to book the trip.
We set off from London on the Eurostar which in theory should take just over 2h but shortly into the journey we already knew this will not be the case as we got stuck for 40 minutes in the Channel tunnel.
Fortunately we had nearly unlimited food and drink supplies – accounting for 4 bottles of wine, cheese, ham, various crisps, grapes and a giant tin of caviar. The only things we were missing were a crisp tablecloth and silverware.
We arrived to Brussels late on Friday night and as it turned out our idea of it was far away from the reality. Wandering through the old town, poverty and drug abuse were present everywhere; it was a sight none of us have expected.
Waking up the following morning, we wandered further into the old town streets, which were full of tourist to a point where it resembled London’s Oxford street on a Black Friday.
It is save to say if it wasn’t for the company and espresso martinis this weekend would be very disappointing. As as beautiful the main square is, there is really not much to do in Brussels, we even failed to find any good restaurants though spent hours trying to find them.
Definite highlights on the weekend:
– Jolyon flipping 20 beer mats
– Jolyon falling off the smallest curb in a very theatrical fashion.
